Research
As a practice we support research studies.
During 2023/2024 Heswall & Pensby Group Practice recruited 865 participants to 5 NHS research studies.
DaRe 2 THINK
Our surgery is taking part in a research study for patients who have had a heart rhythm problem called atrial fibrillation (AF).
The aim of this NHS study is to see whether patients who have had AF would benefit from receiving blood thinners earlier than they would usually receive. Blood thinners are commonly used in patients at high risk to prevent strokes and blood clots. Patients with AF also have a high risk of developing dementia. Newer blood thinners (direct oral anticoagulants) could help to prevent cognitive decline (trouble remembering, concentrating or making everyday decisions) that lead to dementia.
This study, DaRe2THINK, is being run in GP surgeries across the NHS in England. The trial uses a new system that means you do not have to visit your doctor or the hospital. You can enter the study by talking with your GP or practice staff on the phone, and completing short forms on your mobile phone, tablet or computer Please read the attached information sheet for more details. You can see a video that outlines the study at https://youtu.be/KLYZTZk4Kmc
If you are interested in taking part in DaRe2THINK then you can:
1) Go to this webpage for more information and to request a call back from a member of the research team: https://redcap.link/d2t
2) Contact Heswall & Pensby Group Practice at your GP surgery by telephone and request to speak with Dr Forster.
Victorion
The Victorion research study aims to find out if the study treatment, called Inclisiran, can help prevent cardiovascular events (such as heart attacks, strokes, procedures to improve blood flow, and death) in adults who are at high cardiovascular risk but have not had a major cardiovascular event, and who also have high cholesterol.

The FLASH Study
Although there are several treatment options already available for asthma, some individuals may still have difficulty controlling their symptoms.
Heswall and Pensby Surgery is taking part in the FLASH study which is investigating whether a medication called Atuliflapon can improve symptoms for patients
living with moderate to severe uncontrolled Asthma.
This study is recruiting male and female participants between the age of 18-55 years of age with a confirmed asthma diagnosis.
Heswall and Pensby Surgery is working with our research technology partner uMed to invite patients to this study. If you meet the study criteria, you may receive a text
message, email or letter asking whether you would like to take part. Participation is entirely voluntary and you can opt out at any time.
If you have any questions about this study please contact the uMed nurse support team at patientsupport@umed.io.
